Grass fire burns in east Houston

HOUSTON

The blaze started around 1:40pm in the 850 block of Maxey Rd. near the East Freeway and Federal Rd. close to near Jacinto City.

No evacuations were ordered, and there were no reports of damage to any structures. The fire was contained as of 5:45pm, officials said.

The Houston Fire Department said about 60 Houston firefighters responded to the incident with 22 units. They received help from Cloverleaf, Sheldon, Channelview, Crosby and Highlands Fire Departments.

Officials said the terrain caused them problems because the fire was along Greens Bayou and its steep slopes were difficult to access with water. The Houston Public Works and Engineering Department provided two bulldozers to aid their efforts.

Maxey Rd. was shut down in both directions while firefighters were actively fighting the blaze.

One firefighter was transported in stable condition to a hospital for possible heat exhaustion. There were no other reported injuries.

HFD requested two bulldozers from Public Works to assist, but officials say they have confined the fire.

The size and cause of the fire are unknown.

This was one of more than 15 grass fires HFD responded to Saturday.
