After years of negotiations, UTMB is moving forward with plans to building a new hospital.

The UT board of regents has approved construction of the Jennie Sealy Hospital on Galveston Island. UTMB says the old Sealy and Shriners Hospitals will be demolished piece by piece to make room for the new facility.

Construction begins next spring, and the new hospital should start accepting patients in 2016. The Sealy and Smith Foundation has pledged $170 million toward the $438 million project.
