Ex-Deputy sheriff sentenced to 5 years for bribery

HOUSTON

George Wesley Ellington was sentenced to five years without parole for accepting a pair of $500 bribes in return for confidential information from law enforcement computer records. He also was paid to protect someone transporting the illegal drug ecstasy.

Ellington's wife was also sentenced today for hiding her husband's criminal activities. She received a year and a day in prison without parole.

He had faced a maximum penalty for each count of 20 years imprisonment and/or a $250,000 fine.

Ellington joined the Harris County Sheriff's Office in October 1997. He was a deputy assigned to the patrol bureau.
