Leaked Whole Foods email sparks controversy

HOUSTON

When Ramadan began august first, Whole Foods began promoting foods and products that are related to the holy month and follow Islamic dietary guidelines. Earlier Tuesday, a company email from a regional office, leaked online, instructed stores to stop promoting or highlighting Ramadan because of some negative feedback from a few customers and bloggers.

Whole Foods headquarters says it never authorized that email and spent much of the day apologizing and explaining the situation on Twitter to people who were upset.

Whole Foods told us, quote, "We're excited to be offering high quality halal products for our shoppers, and we stand behind them and our promotion of them, just like we do with other seasonal and holiday products."
