HOUSTON --Police say a woman was speeding in west Houston before crashing her car into a tree overnight, killing her at the scene. It happened around 2:30am on Briar Forest near Riverview. Police say the victim was driving a white Volvo S40 at a high rate of speed westbound in the 12000 block of Briar Forest Drive when she hit a patch of water and lost control. She failed to maintain a single lane and struck a tree in the median. The car almost split in half after hitting the tree. There were no other passengers or vehicles involved in this incident. Rescue crews tried to cut the woman out of her car, but she died before she could be transported to a hospital. The 24-year-old female victim was pronounced dead at the scene. Her identity is pending verification by the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences.
