Seventeen people are now in federal custody after being pulled from a van in what investigators believe was an attempt to sneak into the country. It happened around 8pm Thursday night on Highway 59 near Townsen in Humble. Those 17 people have been moved to the Immigrations and Customs Enforcement detention facility.

It started last night when a van was pulled over by Humble police for allegedly speeding.

Of the 17 people inside, two are suspected smugglers and four are juveniles. Police tell us none of the occupants could speak English or had identification.

Police called Immigration and Customs Enforcement who took control of the scene, taking everyone into custody. The undocumented immigrants, ICE believes, are from Mexico, Guatemala, and El Salvador.

The two suspected smugglers' cases will be referred to the US Attorney's Office.
