The family of 19-year-old Isis Obed Murillo filed its suit Thursday against Roberto Micheletti, who was Honduras' interim president after the June 2009 coup that ousted President Manuel Zelaya.
Murillo was shot July 2009 by soldiers at an airport in the Honduran capital of Tegucigalpa while Zelaya tried returning to the country.
The suit was filed under laws that allow non-U.S. citizens to seek damages for torture and illegal killings abroad if the accused live in or have assets in the U.S. or if the accused violates international law.
Court records didn't list an attorney for Micheletti.
