Galveston police chief steps down

GALVESTON, TX On Tuesday, Chief Charles Wiley stepped down, and the city's risk manager, Robert Simmons, took over as interim police chief. Chief Wiley announced he was stepping down April 29 following the firing of city manager Steve LeBlanc.

The timing of the transition was agreed upon by Wiley and interim city manager Brian Maxwell. The list of possible permanent replacements has been narrowed to three names and Maxwell hopes to announce his selection by the end of the week, with the hopes of having the new chief in place by early January.

Galveston's city council must ratify the appointment and could do so at their June 23 meeting. Chief Wiley will be on leave with pay until July 7, the date originally scheduled for his retirement.
