Pentagon Papers to be released today

The complete Pentagon Papers are being made public by the federal government for the first time. The Lyndon B. Johnson Library and Museum in Austin will unveil the once-top secret, 7,000-page Pentagon study of the Vietnam War on Monday.

Simultaneous releases are scheduled at the National Archives in Washington, the John F. Kennedy Library in Boston, the Richard Nixon Library in Yorba Linda, Calif., and the National Archives in College Park, Md.

The release comes exactly 40 years after The New York Times published leaked portions of the report. A federal judge soon halted their publication, though other newspapers then began publishing the documents.

A split U.S. Supreme Court eventually struck down the judge's ruling, leading to a major legal victory for press freedom.
