HPD: Drunk driver caused fatal crash

HOUSTON It happened around 2am Saturday on Harwin Dr. at W. Sam Houston Pkwy. in southwest Houston.

Police said the driver of a Volkswagon Volt was speeding southbound on the W. Sam Houston Pkwy. feeder road when he ran the red light at Harwin, smashing into the side of a black Ford Mustang that had the green light.

The driver of the Mustang was killed.

Police said the driver of the VW tried to flee the scene on foot, but a Houston Police Department unit was close. As the officer arrived, witnesses pointed him in the right direction and the suspect was caught about four blocks away.

According to officials, the man failed a sobriety test and was taken into custody. He is expected to be charged with intoxication manslaughter, police said.

Neither vehicle had any passengers.
