Police say a 14-year-old boy is accused of fatally shooting a man on a Southeast Texas porch in a failed attempt to steal a car from the driveway. West Orange police say robbery is the suspected motive in the killing of 63-year-old Charles Henry Southard of Corsicana. Police believe Southard was visiting friends in West Orange, about 100 miles northeast of Houston. A woman was at the home during the shooting.
Assistant Chief Jessie Romero says the boy was arrested Thursday on a murder charge and is in juvenile custody. Police didn't immediately return a message Friday from The Associated Press.
Romero says police responded to a 911 call Wednesday and caught the teen and a 9-year-old boy blocks away. The younger boy was questioned and released to his parents.
