Cop fired, 6 suspended after party

AUSTIN, TX Austin Police Chief Art Acevedo (ah-suh-VAY'-doh) says Officer Michael Hamilton was fired Thursday. Hamilton was charged with drunken driving after investigators say he crashed his unmarked police car on Dec. 3.

Details are in city disciplinary memos provided to the Austin American-Statesman. The six other officers were suspended between four and 15 days for drinking while on call, operating police vehicles after drinking alcohol and failing to report the actions to supervisors.

Sgt. Wayne Vincent, president of the Austin Police Association union, says Hamilton will likely appeal his firing. The DWI case is pending.
