Day care owner in fatal fire wants lower bond

HOUSTON Attorney Mike DeGeurin said Thursday that Jessica Tata's bond is "illegally excessive." He filed a motion seeking a reduction to $50,000.

State District Judge Marc Brown set a May 27 hearing on the motion.

Authorities believe the 23-year-old Tata left seven children she was caring for alone while she went shopping, and the Feb. 24 fire was ignited by a stove-top burner that was left on.

Tata fled to Nigeria before being returned to the U.S. nearly a month later.
