Bus accident in Victoria kills 1, injures 21 others

HOUSTON It was a Greyhound bus run by Valley Transit. Investigators tell us the bus from Houston was traveling south on Highway 77 in Victoria last night when it collided with a pickup and hit a pole.

The accident killed one woman, 53-year-old Juana Lopez Perez of Matamoros, Mexico, and injured 21 other passengers. The bus was just south of Victoria on Highway 77 when the driver tells the DPS that a pickup truck pulled out in front of him and sideswiped the bus. The bus veered and hit a utility pole.

The passengers were taken to two local hospitals. DeTar Navarro Hospital took in eight patients. Four were admitted to the hospital for their injuries and the rest were treated and released. Citizens Hospital says 13 were taken there. All have been released except for one. That patient is listed as stable with non-life threatening injuries.

The pickup truck driver is being ticketed for failing to yield. Any other charges involving this case would be at the discretion of the Victoria County district attorney.
