UNIVERSITY PARK, TX --The Dalai Lama received an honorary degree and delivered a guest lecture at Southern Methodist University. The spiritual leader of Tibet and 1989 Nobel Peace Prize winner appeared Monday as part of the Dallas-area university's Hart Global Leaders Forum. An SMU statement says he was presented with a Doctor of Humane Letters honorary degree from the university. He addressed an audience expected to include about 2,000 high school students, SMU faculty and staff and about 500 members of the general public. The Dalai Lama's appearance came after his announcement in mid-March that he would retire as head of state for the Tibetan government-in-exile.
