Baby has first confirmed case of measles in Houston in 6 years

HOUSTON Kathy Barton with Houston's Health and Human Services Department said the 11-month-old baby girl came down with measles after returning home from a family trip to Orlando at the end of March.

While measles is highly contagious, Barton says this appears to be an isolated case. Nobody else in contact with the girl, including family members, has come down with measles. The baby does not attend day care.

Barton reminds parents of the importance of childhood immunizations. She adds that the current vaccination rate in Houston for three-year-olds is about 87 percent, and the number climbs to close to 100 percent for four-year-olds. Houston's health department is not planning any special immunization drives due to this measles case.
