Student brought loaded gun to Mayde Creek HS

HOUSTON According to Katy ISD spokesperson Steve Stanford, at about 1pm Tuesday students alerted officials at Mayde Creek High School that a student had a loaded gun. The student apparently had the gun in his backpack and was showing it off in a bathroom. Another student told authorities who found the student and confiscated the weapon.

There's no immediate word what disciplinary action the student may face. Authorities are in contact with the student's parents. An investigation is underway.

The following letter was sent to parents:

    April 5, 2011
    Dear Parents:
The purpose of this message is to bring to your attention an incident that happened on campus today. Earlier in the day, a student alerted campus administration to the fact that another student had brought a weapon to school. Apparently, the student in question brought the weapon in his backpack and was showing it off to other students in the restroom. A student immediately notified campus administrators.

After being alerted by a student to the fact that a weapon was on campus, administrators immediately investigated and within minutes took possession of the pistol, which was loaded. The weapon was secured and Katy ISD Police were notified. We have also contacted the student's parents and are dealing with this issue in the proper manner and will be taking the appropriate disciplinary action. We will continue to look into this matter and determine all the factors leading to this incident.

I would also like to take this time to congratulate the student who first alerted us to the fact that there was a weapon on campus. Students are often the first line of defense when it comes to keeping our school safe as they often have first-hand knowledge about what their classmates are doing. I ask that you use this incident today as a teachable moment with your child to help confirm with them the important role they play in keeping our school safe.

The safety of your child and of every other student here at Mayde Creek High School is our highest priority. Understandably, a weapon on campus is a concern to all of us. With your help, we will continue our commitment to creating a safe, secure and conducive learning environment for your child. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.

    Sincerely,
    Dr. Cazilda Steele
    Principal, Mayde Creek High School
