Firefighters battle 2-alarm blaze in NW Houston

HOUSTON The fire erupted around 9pm Monday at Creekmont Forest Condominiums on Birchmont Drive near Antoine Drive.

The layout of the building made fighting the fire more difficult. Firefighters pulled a second alarm because there are so many entrances to the building.

Officials checked the entire building and believe everyone got out with no injuries.

In the early minutes of this fire, a lot of neighbors pitched into help. Some nearby workers saw the smoke and flames and started knocking on doors and making sure everyone would get out.

"We were just trying to make sure the kids got out first for safety reasons. Everybody was trying to get their furniture and stuff. We said, 'Leave the furniture. We wanna make sure there wasn't anyone else in the house. If so, we need to get everybody out,'" said Ricky Johnson, who works next door.

The fire was knocked out shortly before 10pm with only light smoke showing. Firefighters were still on scene late Monday cleaning and putting out any remaining hotspots.
