House tells its committees to find harmful rules

WASHINGTON The vote Friday was 391-28 for the Republican-sponsored resolution, which has little practical effect. Committee chairmen already were under instructions from Republican leaders to try to modify or eliminate unnecessary government rules. Several committees have held hearings to spotlight the issue.

House Democrats argued the resolution was unnecessary but voted for it anyway. President Barack Obama has pledged to review all federal regulations and get rid of those no longer needed.

Democrats have defended many regulations as necessary to protect Americans' health and safety in the workplace.
