Proposed HISD budget to be discussed tonight

HISD could lose $300 million a year in state funding. The cuts will impact the future of the district's magnet programs. Tonight at 7pm, HISD will hold another town meeting at MacGregor Elementary on La Branch explaining their proposed budget.

Performance pay the standard?

Performance based pay could become the standard for all Texas teachers. Right now their salary is based on seniority. But some education reformers in Austin see the budget shortfall as an opportunity to change education across the state, starting with teacher pay. They say a performance based pay schedule could save state money and put more control back in the hands of school districts.

The proposed performance-based pay would not depend entirely on the test scores of students. It would be linked to teacher appraisals and professional development.
