HOUSTON --It's hard to believe that the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo is just 33 days away, but here at Eyewitness News, we want to let you in early on one of Houston's best kept secrets that's sure to Stretch Your Dollar. The name of the store is called Texas Junk Company and it's located in Montrose. It's a one-of-a-kind place that's known for its used cowboy boots and other rodeo wear. The catch is -- it's only open two days a week, so that's why we are giving you plenty of time to shop. The name of the store says it all: Texas Junk Company. "I am a one-man operation so there might be about half an inch off dust on the shelves," the store's owner, Robert Novotney said. "It's basically living off the street; it's the discards from the population. Novotney collects all kinds of junk to sell, from picture frames to random household items, but it was his stock of cowboy boots for which he quickly became famous. Novotney travels all over Texas every week, buying boots to resell at the Texas Junk Company. "I put on over 600 miles this week, and I went as far as Gonzalez looking for boots," he said. When he gets back, his boots are put on the shelves and organized by size and width. There are men's, women's and boots for children for sale. Some are vintage; some have been worn once or twice and others are in need of a little TLC. The price ranges from $30 up to hundreds of dollars. But most of the boots are priced from $30 to $70. Lena Oldums just purchased her rodeo wear. "For less than a $100 I got boots for me, boots for my son for and a hat for him, so we're good," she said. She's not only saving money but she feels buying used is more authentic. "It's already kind of worn in so they're gonna fit good, and it doesn't look like you just went to the store," Oldums said. The Texas Junk Company also has denim jackets for $10, western shirts for $6 and cowboy hats that start at $10. A word of caution though; for ladies whose shoe sizes are 7 1/2 to 9, those boots fly off the shelf. Texas Junk Company is only open Friday and Saturday from 11am to 6pm. It's located at 215 Welch St. For the best selection, shop on Friday when the owner opens the doors at 11am. He will have all new merchandise on the shelves. The store's phone number is 713-524-6257.
