Police: Suspect fatally shot by officer at Deerbrook Mall

HUMBLE, TX The incident happened Monday morning. Humble police say they responded to a call of a burglary of a motor vehicle in progress outside Hobby Lobby. Police arrived and saw a suspect getting out of the car and into a pickup truck that was reported stolen.

Officers located the truck outside of the Dillard's and that's when Humble police say an officer got out of the car with his weapon drawn. The pickup truck tried to back up and police say the officer broke out the passenger window of the truck with his handgun. That gun accidentally discharged, police say, fatally striking one of the suspects.

Police say the suspect, later identified as Esteban Carlon, was pronounced dead at the scene. The 23 year old has convictions in 2009 for failure to identify himself to a police officer and theft -- both misdemeanors -- and convictions in 2005 for burglary of a residence and theft, of which both were felonies.

The second suspect in the truck was taken into custody. Humble police told us that Joaquin Carlon, 21, a Hispanic male from Houston, was arrested and charged with unauthorized use of a motor vehicle.

Humble police are still investigating.

Deerbook Mall management said that no shoppers were injured in the incident.
