Texans try to get Herring, keep Matthews

HOUSTON We were the first to tell that the Texans would probably hire Cowboys linebackers coach Reggie Herring even though the Texans were originally denied permission to talk to him. Expect an official announcement that Herring will be the new linebacker coach.

And the Cowboys are talking to offensive assistant Bruce Matthews, former Oilers Hall of Famer who has been helping coach the offensive line. The Texans want to keep him, but they're going to have to give him more responsibility. Matthews told Bob Allen last season that he enjoys coaching but wishes the team would let him have more input.
