FBI probes death of man at Port of Houston

HOUSTON There seems to be a question as to who will handle the investigation, since it appears the man died while the ship was at sea.

The man's body was found early Thursday morning on a ship at Dock 32. According to an FBI spokesperson, the person is from Ukraine and was on the cargo ship 'Alexia' at sea when he died, possibly on New Year's Eve.

The Alexia docked at the Port of Houston Wednesday night. The FBI says the man didn't have any signs to determine how he died. The Harris County Medical Examiner's Office is looking into it.

Here's where things get complicated. The victim and the vessel are from the Ukraine. Authorities say so far, they believe the death didn't happen on U.S. waters, which means the investigation may be outside of the FBI's authority.

Meantime, the FBI is still collecting evidence and they're interviewing crew members.

Authorities are waiting on the autopsy to be completed. So far, there's no word on when that ship will leave the port.
