TCEQ grants permits for uranium mine

AUSTIN, TX The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality voted Tuesday to grant mine and production permits to Uranium Energy Corp.

The company plans to construct the mine about 13 miles north of Goliad, a town of 2,000 located 60 miles north of Corpus Christi.

Attorney Jim Blackburn, representing Goliad County, says residents are concerned about possible contamination of groundwater.

UEC attorney Monica Jacobs says the company's permit covers an area about 2,000 feet away from a fault line.

The company says the Goliad project has one remaining state authorization pending, a radioactive material license.
