Witnesses described seeing heavy smoke and flames coming from the roof. Residents say the firefighters' efforts were hampered because of lack of water pressure from a nearby hydrant. Crews were forced to use another water source further away before they were able to get the fire out.
Residents say the whole thing was frightening.
"We heard a fire and everybody said, 'Fire' and 'Everybody get out,'" said fire victim Jessica Whately. "Some of us tried to grab things and some of us didn't. I just grabbed my kids and moved my car this way and that's all I could do."
Everyone made it out OK. About 4 to 5 units were destroyed, several others were badly damaged.
There is no word yet on what caused the flames.
