We have a unique story about the friendship between the Japanese City of Niigata and Galveston, and how Galveston received a $30,000 donation to replace trees destroyed in Hurricane Ike from their sister city. The Galveston Tree Conservancy purchased and planted the trees already. Coming up today on Eyewitness News at 4pm, meet the Japanese exchange kids and their host kids at Ball High School and hear about their experiences so far. There are 16 kids from Niigata attending Galveston ISD with four adults from Japan as well.

They students are here for one week. They do this every year alternating host cities.

Over the years, he Japanese city has given a lot of money to Galveston in the wake of various hurricanes including Alicia, Karl, and now Ike.
