Houston police used domestic violence awareness month as a backdrop to round up people accused of domestic abuse. A HPD video shows officers with the Special Crimes Division arresting several suspects with outstanding warrants in domestic abuse cases.

The department says 52 people died by domestic violence in 2009. This year, domestic violence has led to 39 deaths. To combat those crimes, HPD sent out special units to round up accused offenders.

"I'm happy to report that the results were exceptional for this month, for the first three and half weeks of October, these units arrested 141 domestic violence offenders," said Captain Craig Goralski with the HPD Special Crimes Division.

Police called the warrant roundup a part of the department's continuing effort to address the domestic abuse issue through prosecution, victim support and education.
