Detectives are still searching for the killers of a 28-year-old man who was shot at southwest Houston apartment complex one year ago. Luis Humberto Mendez was standing in the breezeway of his apartment complex in the 5500 block of Clarewood during the wee hours of October 10, 2009 when he was shot. He was waiting for his girlfriend to walk her dog in the courtyard when she said she was approached by four men.

Three of the men walked past her, but the fourth one tried to snatch her purse and knocked her into the bushes. The man ran off toward the breezeway, where she heard multiple gunshots and the four suspects run off.

She ran into the breezeway and saw Mendez had been shot several times. He died in her arms.

Police have released composite sketches of two suspects in his murder. Anyone who recognizes him is encouraged to contact Crime Stoppers at 713-222-8477. The agency and private sources are willing to pay up to $6,331 for successful tips leading to any arrests.
