Two people, including one child, were injured by a lightning strike during soccer practice at a New Caney ISD elementary school. The incident happened Thursday night on a field at Crippen Elementary School near Porter. Witnesses said one of the victims is the coach for the soccer team practicing on the field. A 9-year-old girl also was struck.

Eyewitnesses say the coach was talking on his cell phone when he was hit by a bolt in the open field. Frank Ramirez, 12, said all he saw was a bright flash.

"I was waiting for my turn to practice, and I was just waiting, and then the lightning hit," Ramirez said. "Everything went blank for me."

The coach was taken to Memorial Hermann Hospital, where he is listed in critical condition. The girl was transported to a hospital in Kingwood.

Witnesses identified the league that uses the elementary school's field for practice as Dynamic Soccer Club. The team, which is not associated with the elementary school, has players ranging between 10 and 13 years old.
