HISD adds math tutoring during school day

HOUSTON The tutoring in the Houston Independent School District, which last school term had nearly 203,000 students, will be separate from the federally mandated tutoring, which must be outside of school hours.

The Houston Chronicle reported Monday that more than 48,000 children had private tutoring in reading and math last year across Texas. The Texas Education Agency reports the cost to taxpayers was $67 million.

Steven Pines with the Education Industry Association says tutored students experience benefits that might not show up on standardized tests.

Most public schools across Texas resume classes Aug. 23.
