Pedestrian struck, killed trying to cross North Freeway

HOUSTON Authorities shut down all southbound lanes of the freeway at Airline Drive. A pedestrian apparently tried to cross the freeway, but didn't make it.

The accident caused major delays for early commuters. All HOV lanes were opened up to commuters to help relieve the congestion. The accident was finally cleared before 8am.

Police say the victim was attempting to cross the North Freeway on foot and was struck by an unknown vehicle around 5:15am. A driver of a second vehicle, a gray Altima, was traveling southbound in the 5100 block of the North Freeway when she also ran over the victim, who was lying in the roadway.

The driver then pulled onto the right shoulder of the freeway to see what she had hit and then later contacted HPD officers to report the accident.

The female victim, 36, was pronounced dead at the scene. Her identity is pending verification by the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences.

No charges have been filed at this time and the investigation is continuing.
