What are the top vehicle break-in hot spots?

HOUSTON On the list, there are hotels, shopping strip centers and malls.

You park, lock your doors, walk off and hope that no one smashes your windows and takes off with your valuables.

Yes, it's Houston and break-ins happen, but there are some spots where they happen more frequently.

In the first six months of 2010, these are the top five spots for burglary of a motor vehicle, according to the Houston Police Department:

  1. Marq-E Center at 7620 Katy Freeway and Silber - 39 offenses
  2. Post Oak Center at 5000 Westheimer - 35 offenses
  3. Hampton Inn at 4500 Post Oak Parkway - 30 offenses
  4. Lupe Tortillas at 2414 Southwest Freeway - 24 offenses
  5. Sam's Boat at 5720 Richmond Avenue - 22 offenses

Police say thieves go for the biggest targets left in plain view such as GPS devices, laptops and cell phones.

They also say that thieves like quick and easy targets so anything you can do to slow down a thief, like use a vehicle safe, will deter a thief.
