Campaign to clean up San Antonio River

SAN ANTONIO, TX The River Walk Watershed Alliance has launched a public education campaign called "River. Life. Love It."

The goal is to reduce certain pollution, such as food tossed in and around the San Antonio River by visitors wanting to feed birds, squirrels or other animals. Experts say such food contributes to more animal waste and the potential for dangerous bacteria.

San Antonio River Authority board member Sally Buchanan on Wednesday said the campaign means people "changing a few habits."

Hotels will post signs reminding guests not to feed river walk wildlife. Food service workers will be trained to use a broom and dustpan when possible, rather than spraying water to push waste into the river.
