A Houston police officer was injured Tuesday afternoon by a runaway tire on the side of the Gulf Freeway. We're told the HPD officer had made a traffic stop and was in the process of writing a ticket on the Gulf Freeway near Edgebrook when a tire flew off a tractor trailer and struck the officer.

The officer was taken to Memorial Hermann Hospital via ambulance. HPD says he was conscious and breathing when he was transported.

HPD identified the officer as Isidro Perez, 47, who has been with the department for 23 years.

We spoke with Isidro's sergeant who told us the officer is alert and smiling. The hospital says Isidro is in good condition.
