The Houston area Red Cross is preparing for Alex with many volunteers on standby. There's a lot of planning that goes into preparing for storms like this. As the storm sets its sights on the south Texas coast, The American Red Cross here in Houston is beginning to mobilize.

A Red Cross emergency communications response vehicle is heading to south Texas. It's equipped with a satellite dish and other technology, which will be used in the areas where phone lines and cell phone towers my go down or lose power.

Texas Governor Rick Perry has ordered the deployment of state resources to assist with possible evacuations. The Red Cross also getting involved to make sure those local communities are ready to respond to disasters.

"We will be serving food out of our emergency response vehicle here. We have insulated containers to keep the food hot or cold at the proper temperature," said Red Cross volunteer Carl Logan.

We should get more information from a Red Cross spokesperson later today regarding the response plan. We will pass that on as soon as we get it.
