Teen mother arrested in death of her newborn

HOUSTON No one knew the teen was pregnant except her 11-year-old sister. She kept it a secret. We should warn you, the details and circumstances surrounding the newborn's death are extremely disturbing.

Homicide investigators say the teen gave birth to the newborn at a friend's apartment in the 10000 block of Bissonnet on April 16.

Three juveniles -- a 14-year-old and two 11-year-olds -- were there to witness it, but there were no adults present, and no one called 911.

Authorities say the kids relied on the Internet to get them through it.

"They learned about childbirth by watching it on YouTube, about how a baby is born," said C.P. Abbey with the Houston Police Department. "That's how they were able to help this 14-year-old give birth."

Police say after the teen gave birth, she placed the newborn on a mattress. They believe the baby suffocated because the airway wasn't clear.

After the infant died, investigators say the group wrapped him in a plastic bag and called a friend's father, who placed the body in a large trash bin.

"The adult who disposed of the baby has not been charged at this point," said Abbey. "That's a consideration that could be made down the road."

It was one of the 11-year-olds who came forward and told a counselor at school about the incident. This was six days after the baby was born.

The contents of the trash bin were taken to a local landfill, but investigators were unable to search for it.

The teen has been referred to Harris County juvenile probation authorities on a felony charge of injury to a child.
