Two killed in wreck that shut down Hwy 249

HOUSTON

Police say shortly after 9am, a GMC van was traveling northbound on Highway 249 at W. Greens Road when it struck the rear of a four-door Saturn that was stopped in a moving lane. The GMC then pushed the Saturn into the shoulder of the roadway and both vehicles caught on fire.

The driver and passenger in the Saturn, one male and one female, were both pronounced dead at the scene. The car was destroyed in the blaze.

The driver of the GMC was able to escape his vehicle safely.

According to police, alcohol was not believed to be a factor in the accident. The investigation is continuing.

The scene is clear at this time, but for a few hours today, the accident caused a major backup. All lanes were blocked and traffic was being forced onto the feeder road.
