Local organization starts community donor drive

HOUSTON The group had employees and other Houstonians register as an organ donor. LifeGift says 107,000 people across the country and 9,000 in Texas sit on lists waiting for life-saving transplants.

"In less time it takes to send a text message or an email, you have the ability to save over 300 lives. So it's just a very, very, easy thing to do," said Elvia Valdez, LifeGift Public Relations Coordinator.

Texas ranks last in registered organ and tissue donors with just four percent of Texans over the age of 18 registered.
