Man accused of killing wife faces a judge

HOUSTON The court had extra security on hand this morning. It was the first time McDougall faced a judge in person. The appearance was only a couple of minutes. It was just enough time to answer questions from Judge Jim Wallace. McDougall was able to tell the judge that he would hire his own attorney.

McDougall was arrested Sunday in the driveway of his Spring home northwest Harris County. McDougall is accused of shooting and killing his wife, Jennifer, who was seven months pregnant. Neighbors say it would have been the couple's fourth child.

As McDougall was taken to jail Sunday night, he said to our Eyewitness News camera, "She had it coming," an open admission the prosecutors say was unusual.

"I've never seen it before, not in the circumstances like this," said prosecutor Bill Exley. "So typically you see a confession like this in a police kind of custodial interrogation and I know that in this instance, he's made some statement openly to the media. So that's unusual."

Authorities have not said anything about McDougall's motive. He remains in custody, charged with capital murder, held without bond. McDougall's next court appearance with an attorney is scheduled for next month.

The couple's three remaining children are in CPS custody.
