Suspected drunk driver appears in court

HOUSTON Jose Reyes Chavez-Ortega, 43, appeared in court Monday morning where a judge revoked his bond because he is in the country illegally.

Police say Chavez was drunk when he crashed his pickup into the SUV injuring four children and three adults at the intersection of Highway 249 and Bammel. Two of those children were seriously injured.

A witness said she encountered the suspect a few blocks before the accident and nearly ran her off the road.

Chavez-Ortega suffered only scratches to his face but was taken to a hospital to take a blood test. Beer cans were found inside the floorboard of his truck.
