Thousands of dead Ike trees removed in Galveston

GALVESTON, TX [Look back at the storm that changed SE Texas]

More than 250 homeowners have been advised that the city will send contractors to examine dead trees and possibly cut them down as part of cleanup from the 2008 storm.

The Galveston County Daily News reported Monday, based on city information, that more than 8,500 trees on private property have been brought down since January.

Acting City Engineer Justin Bowling says crews have identified hundreds more seemingly dead and dangerous trees on private land. The city has sent letters to those homeowners advising them that the trees will be surveyed.

Crews also have felled 4,577 trees in public rights of way.

The federal government is paying for dead tree removal.
