Thieves steal Torahs from Brooklyn synagogue

BROOKLYN They broke into the Congregation Klhal Yirei Hashem in Borough Park, apparently going straight for the ark and somehow getting past a combinaton lock.

They stole the sacred and very valuable Torahs and their silver adornments.

Rabbi Jack Meyer says five Torah scrolls with their silver crowns and breast plates worth a quarter of a million dollars were taken.

Rabbi Meyer and others quickly responding from the community relayed information to the synagogue's rabbi who is traveling in Israel.

As officers fanned out across the neighborhood searching for clues, and detectives began a canvas of the area, there is a renewed call for synagogues to register and scan their Torahs.

Still the theft is painful to hear, especially for Abe Kleinbart whose Torah in honor of his father was stolen 25 years ago.

Kleinbart says it brings back horrid memories.
