There's legal help for people who can't afford their own attorney. Harris County will apply for a state grant to open a new public defender's office. County commissioners gave their approval to apply for the state grant. The $4.4 million would go towards opening a new office where attorneys would be given cases based on their specialties.

Right now, judges appoint lawyers for those who can't pay for their own by using a random list.
