Be ready to evacuate

HOUSTON People living along the coast in a designated evacuation zone as well as those with medical needs or do not have the means to take care of themselves should be prepared to leave when a hurricane threatens. People who live inland away from the water should consider riding out the storm at home.

Evacuations are called by local authorities based on the expected storm surge. If necessary, contraflow traffic lanes will be set up on Interstate 10 west of Houston and on Interstate 45, US Highways 59 and 290 north of Houston. When you hit the road, follow the road signs carefully.

Before leaving, make sure your house is secure. Take food and water for the trip because stores might not be open along the route. Fill your car up with gas as soon as possible. Bring extra cash in case ATMs are not working. Notify family members about your plan and final destination. And be patient. Travel times will be significantly longer than usual.
