Father of girl killed in carjacking attempt speaks

HOUSTON It was Sunday afternoon when investigators say Alton Barnes, 24, shot and killed three-year-old Charissa Powell after Charissa's father pleaded with the gunmen to get his kids out of the car.

Last night, friends of the Powell family held a fundraiser to help Charissa's family. The money will help the family pay for their daughter's funeral and hospital bills for her one-year-old brother, who was injured in the ordeal.

Charles Powell says he tried to get the kids out of the car before the suspects started shooting. He didn't want to show his face on camera because one suspect is still on the loose.

"He shot her in the process of trying to shoot me, to rob for some swangers," said Powell. "If I knew that would happen, I would have never taken my kids outside."

Barnes, 24, is charged with capital murder in Charissa's death. Police are still searching for his cousin, 19-year-old Jonathan Barnes, also known as Jonathan Hunter. They say he's armed and dangerous.
