A garbage truck driver started his first day on the job by bailing out on the Gulf Freeway after he saw flames in his rear-view mirror. It happened just after 4:30am on the southbound lanes of the freeway near Telephone. The driver says he was headed to his next pickup when he noticed flames shooting from the back of the vehicle.

He believes debris picked up earlier in the night had caught fire. The driver says it was his first day on the job.

"First night yeah, this truck almost killed me. I can't believe it.," said driver Jose Gonzalez.

Firefighters had to use saws to cut through the truck's hull in order to get to the fire. The cause of the fire is still unknown.
