Deputies: Suicidal driver dies after hitting fence

HOUSTON It happened in the 7100 block of Log Cradle Drive around 3am. According to the Harris County Sheriff's office, Servando Romero was driving his pickup with his brother-in-law as a passenger when he told the other man he didn't want to live any more. Romero was reportedly distraught over his wife's decision to leave him.

Deputies say Romero then sped down the road and intentionally drove over the curb, striking a metal light pole. The vehicle careened through Crossing Drive and through several wooden fences.

"It appears that when he drove through one of the fences one of the planks hit the driver in the head," said Sgt. S. Wolverton with the Harris County Sheriff's Office. "Very fortunate he didn't hit a house, he just hit the fences."

Romero was nearly decapitated by the fence board and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The brother-in-law was not injured, and fled the scene after the crash. He was later apprehended. The accident remains under investigation.
