A San Antonio city councilman will miss work for a while because the Air Force has called him to active duty. Phil Cortez said Thursday he'll vacate his seat for up to three months and asked the council to make his fiancee his interim replacement. His fiancee, Leticia Cantu, has worked for four council members. The council will consider Cortez's replacement next week.

City Attorney Michael Bernard noted that when state Reps. Frank Corte Jr. of San Antonio and Rick Noriega of Houston were called up for military service and temporarily vacated their seats, they selected their wives as interim replacements.

Cortez, 31, has been in the the Air Force Reserve since 1999.
