Austin man convicted in 2003 killing of woman

AUSTIN, TX The punishment phase was to begin Wednesday for 37-year-old Milton Gobert, who could get the death penalty.

Jurors on Tuesday convicted Gobert of capital murder in the slaying of 37-year-old Mel Cotton, who was stabbed and cut dozens of times.

Gobert had claimed self defense.

Cotton's now-11-year-old son, who prosecutors say was stabbed several times by Gobert, testified last week about witnessing his mother being attacked at their home.

Prosecutors say Gobert killed Cotton because she helped his ex-girlfriend move out of his apartment. A voice mail to his ex-girlfriend, played in court, had Gobert saying some of his things were taken during the move.
